Violent home invasion preceded Melbourne man being shot dead, police say
A violent home invasion in which a woman was attacked with a machete has ended in the shooting death of a man north of Melbourne.
Police said up to five offenders armed with firearms and a machete stormed a Donnybrook home on Middlemount Street just after 4am today, in an allegedly targeted attack.
A female occupant of the home, 27, was slashed with a machete before it’s alleged the male occupant of the house, 28, pried a handgun from one of the offenders and shot a man dead.
Victoria Police Detective Inspector Graham Banks said it’s believed one of the offenders had been shot, however the deceased man had not yet been identified.
“There’s been some sort of a struggle and a firearm has been claimed off one of the offenders who has come into the house,” he said.
“Shortly after that, several shots have taken place.”
Emergency services performed CPR on the man but he died at the scene.
A female occupant of the home was left with serious injuries and taken to hospital, while a man living there was uninjured.
Banks said that not long after the incident, a 22-year-old Clifton Hill man presented to a Victorian hospital with gunshot wounds, and police were investigating whether he was linked to the assault.
The man has been transport to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition and is undergoing surgery.
A firearm, believed to be linked to the incident, was found in Doreen, in Melbourne’s north.
Banks said it was too early to determine a motive.
“It’s a shocking incident when you look at the fact that the injuries sustained by the female with a machete, in her own home,” he said.
“The fact that there was firearms involved, the fact that someone is now deceased as a result of their attendance at that location.
“The whole thing is very concerning.”
