They shouldn’t have to put up with this’: Man charged with assaulting three Sydney police officers
Three police officers are in hospital after allegedly being kicked and punched in a string of attacks.
The alleged rampage began just before midday when two female senior constables spoke to a man on Jacobs Street in Bankstown.
“He has nearly been hit by a bus… so they asked him to get off the road,” Detective Superintendent Todd Cunningham said today.
Video appears to show one officer being hit with a flurry of punches and knees, cornered and subject to a barrage of abuse.
Her partner, dazed after being struck herself, pulls out pepper spray to try and stop the alleged attack.
“A number of members of the community came and assisted the police and checked on their welfare,” Detective Superintendent Cunningham said.
Further police and paramedics attended the scene and provided medical treatment to the officers – aged 30 and 32 – who both sustained injuries during the incident.
The two women, both from the Transport Command, were taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment.
The man accused of the attack was arrested at a home in Yagoona a short time later.
However, the 43-year-old allegedly assaulted a third officer at Bankstown Police Station.
The male senior constable, aged 32, was also taken to Bankstown Hospital.
“The officers have come to work every day, putting their own families at risk when they go home… and they shouldn’t have to put up with this from one individual,” Detective Superintendent Cunningham said.
The Yagoona man was subsequently charged with three counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty causing actual bodily harm, resisting or hindering a police officer in the execution of their duty, not complying with COVID-19 directions and travelling or attempting to travel without a valid ticket.
He was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court tomorrow.
The three police officers have since been released from hospital.
