Rockhampton Zoo devastated by stillborn baby chimpanzee
Zookeepers and visitors at a Central Queensland icon are devastated after one of their Chimpanzees delivered a stillborn baby for the second time.
Samantha the Chimp at Rockhampton Zoo suffered the incident this afternoon after veterinarians were forced to perform a caesarean section about 1.30pm.
In a post to Facebook, the zoo said everyone was devastated by the result.
“We are heartbroken to share the news with you that Samantha’s baby was delivered stillborn this afternoon,” Rockhampton Zoo shared.
“Zoo staff, working closely with veterinarians and a gynaecologist, made the difficult decision to step in and assist Samantha with the delivery of the baby. She underwent a caesarean section about 1:30pm, however the baby was deceased. He was a boy.
“Samantha remains sedated this afternoon and her welfare is our highest priority.”
Samantha is one of a number of chimps at the zoo, which also houses crocodiles, cassowaries, kangaroos, wombats and a number of reptiles and snakes.
