One firefighter dead, another injured in South Australia bushfires
One firefighter has died and another has been seriously injured while battling a major bushfire in South Australia’s south-east.
About 150 firefighters have been fighting the blaze near Lucindale, with emergency services urging people in the area to stay alert.
South Australia’s Country Fire Service (CFS) confirmed two members were involved in a “falling tree incident”, which resulted in “one fatality and one serious injury”.
“Family and other personnel have been informed and are being offered support at this time,” the CFS said.
“The seriously injured CFS member has been taken to hospital for further treatment.
“The safety and wellbeing of our people is our highest priority and our thoughts are with our CFS family at this time.
“We are obtaining more information and will provide another update shortly.”
More than 150 firefighters from both South Australia and Victoria are currently on scene at the blaze.
Earlier today, Premier Steven Marshall thanked “every single person who works on the front line” for their efforts.
“We have had significant fires down in the south-east, particularly around the Lucindale area in the past 48 hours,” Mr Marshall said.
The fire has been burning through bluegum plantations, scrub and grassland.
Currently, the threat is low but the CFS is concerned about high temperatures and winds which could hinder efforts to contain it.
