Markle dad says British royals ‘not racist’, TV host storms off set as shockwaves of Oprah interview reverberate
Meghan Markle’s estranged father Thomas Markle says he doesn’t believe the Royal Family is racist as shockwaves from the Oprah Winfrey interview continue to reverberate in the United Kingdom.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s explosive tell-all TV interview has divided people around the world, rocking an institution that is struggling to modernise with claims of racism and callousness toward a woman struggling with suicidal thoughts.
The divide was never more evident than on British breakfast television on Tuesday when outspoken Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan stormed off set during a spat with a co-host about his treatment of the Duchess.
“I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle. I understand that you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one, and she cut you off. She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her,” presenter Alex Beresford told Morgan before he stormed off saying “I’m done with this”.
Morgan later tweeted saying: “I just prefer not to sit there listening to colleagues call me diabolical.”
Later in the program, Mr Markle was interviewed from a home in Rosarito, Mexico, in his first interview since the Winfrey special aired.
Mr Markle levelled multiple criticisms at his daughter and son-in-law, including dismissing an allegation of racism in the Royal Family as “bullsh–“.
Meghan told Winfrey that when she was pregnant with her son Archie, there were “concerns and conversations” within the palace about how “dark” her child’s skin would be when he was born.
“I have great respect for the royals and I don’t think the royal family are racist at all,” Mr Markle said.
“The thing about what colour will her baby be or how dark will her baby be, I’m guessing and hoping it’s just a dumb question from somebody. It could just be that simple, somebody’s asked a stupid question rather than it being a total racist.”
Pressure is mounting on the royal family to respond to the bombshell interview, nearly two days after the sensational claims that have rocked the Palace.
It is understood that the Queen is in crisis talks with senior members of the family, firstly about whether they will be putting out a statement and issuing a response and then what that response would be.
