Former Top Gear host ‘asks himself why’ after turning to farming

Jeremy Clarkson is no stranger to a challenge or two.

But the British broadcaster and former Top Gear host has revealed he’s been asking “what was I thinking” every day after trying his hand at farming.

The car lover has traded the Jaguars and Porches for a Lamborghini tractor in the Amazon Prime series Clarkson Farm.

Gone are the speedways of the Grand Prix. In are the rolling green hills of the sheep-studded English country side.

Speaking to Today newsreader Alex Cullen, who was raised on a farm in the northern NSW town of Coonamble, Clarkson said he picked the worst year to start farming.

“We set five weather records in the UK in that 12-month period,” the 61-year-old said.

“Five.

“We had the wettest autumn ever. It rained solidly for six weeks. COVID came along, so now I’m having to do it all by myself.”

Clarkson managed to battle his way through a COVID infection and sheep mustering to bring his new series to air.

“(I’ve had) hangovers that are far, far worse than COVID,” he said.

“It was the least ill I’ve ever been.”

One of the biggest challenges Clarkson has faced is dealing with sheep.

“They want to die … I’m going to put my head in a stock fence and cut it off,” he said.

While his high-speed life has changed gears, glimpses of the old Clarkson rears its head.

When the luxury car aficionado saw a “relatively inexpensive” Lamborghini tractor listed for sale, he jumped to buy it.

“I’m an idiot,” he told Alex.

“I saw it for sale in second-hand columns…It says Lamborghini on it, so I shall buy that.

“It’s far too big. Even in Australia you would call it big.”

Despite the hardships, Clarkson refuses to give life on the land up.

“Nothing is gonna stop me. I adore it, absolutely adore it.”
