High Commission for Pakistan in Canberra Commemorates Defence Day
The High Commission for Pakistan in Canberra commemorated Defence Day to pay tribute to the valiant soldiers and martyrs who have defended the nation with unwavering courage and determination.
Defence Day, observed annually in Pakistan on September 6th, commemorates the historic 1965 Pakistan-India war, during which the Pakistani armed forces displayed exceptional valour and resilience in the face of adversity. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the nation’s brave servicemen and women who have defended Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity throughout its history.
In addition to honouring the sacrifices made during the 1965 war, the event highlighted Pakistan’s vital role in international peacekeeping efforts. Pakistan has a long-standing tradition of contributing to United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions worldwide. Over the years, Pakistani peacekeepers have demonstrated exceptional professionalism and courage while serving in some of the most challenging conflict zones across the globe. Their efforts have been crucial in maintaining peace, providing humanitarian assistance, and upholding the principles of the United Nations.
Speaking at the ceremony, His Excellency Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, High Commissioner of Pakistan to Australia, highlighted the significance of Defence Day and expressed deep gratitude to the armed forces for their dedication and sacrifices.
He emphasized Pakistan’s substantial contributions to UN Peace operations, citing the deployment of over 200,000 men and women to 46 UN missions.
He also emphasized the strong Pakistan-Australia defence ties that span various domains. The historical association between the two nations predates the creation of Pakistan, with the first Australian officer attending the command and staff course at Quetta in 1912. Following independence, Australian General Ross Cairns Mccay assumed the role of the first Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army.
The two countries have an established institutional mechanism of Defence and Security Talks and the 1.5 Track Security Dialogue. The two countries have also collaborated closely in Afghanistan. The High Commissioner expressed optimism about further strengthening these ties.
In his remarks, Defence Advisor Brigadier Muhammad Laique Rafiq said that 6 September serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s armed forces and their unyielding commitment to safeguarding the nation’s interests.
The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Australian government and defence officials, defence attaches from friendly countries, media and members of the Pakistani community in Australia.
