Two men charged in relation to alleged murder of Mejid Hamzy
Two men have been charged in relation to the alleged murder of Mejid Hamzy months after the crime boss’ brother was shot dead outside his Sydney home.
A 38-year-old man has been charged with 17 offences, including murder, however police say he was not the person responsible for shooting Hamzy when he was gunned down outside his Condell Park home in October last year.
Police allege he was involved in the planning of the murder, while a 44-year-old is accused of concealing the BMW used in the attack.
The 44-year-old has also been charged with several drug related offences.
Mr Hamzy was the older brother of crime gang Brothers 4 Life founder and convicted killer Bassam Hamzy, who is currently jailed in Goulburn’s supermax prison.
Mr Hamzy was gunned down outside his home on Simmat Avenue in Condell Park.
Police are alleging the 38-year-old was in one of the getaway cars at the scene of the shooting.
“It is not alleged that he was the actual shooter of Mr Hamzy,” Detective Superintendent Grant Taylor said.
Police are still searching for the person who pulled the trigger with more people expected to be linked to the incident.
Police are also investigating whether the shooting was linked to the murder of Bilal Hamzy however no link has yet been established.
“There are tentacles everywhere in regard to criminality,” Mr Taylor said.
During the arrests police seized a large number of motor vehicle parts which are of “great interest” to police.
A Porsche allegedly stolen from Hunters Hill was also seized as evidence.
Earlier this month, police investigating the murder released CCTV footage of cars driving through Sydney’s west as part of a public appeal.
It showed a Toyota and Mercedes, as well as footage of a third vehicle of interest – a white BMW 328i.
Police believe the three vehicles in the footage travelled from Moorebank to Condell Park prior to and after the shooting.
In March this year, detectives released CCTV of two vehicles of interest – a grey Toyota Rav 4 and a matte black Mercedes Benz.
Police have described today’s arrests as a “significant breakthrough” in the investigation into organised crime in Sydney’s south west.
“The investigation is still ongoing but today’s a signification milestone that we’re very pleased about,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Darren Bennett said.
“These are always complex crimes to investigate but we have tricks up our sleeve.”
“Let that be a reminder to anyone who thinks about committing any violent crimes in south west Sydney, we will catch you, that is guaranteed.”
