Police witness 53 driving offences on one Melbourne road in just two hours
Police witnessed 53 driving offences on one major Melbourne road in the space of just two hours, leading to seven drivers losing their licences.
Victoria Police kept watch over the stretch of Citylink between Bulla Road and Dynon Road in inner Melbourne between 7am and 9am today as part of a push to crackdown on early morning speeding.
The operation led to 36 drivers being caught speeding, with seven stripped of their licences.
Other drivers were cause for driving while suspended, as well as driving in lanes that were displaying a red cross.
One driver was also charged with a drug-driving offence.
Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Pickering said the number of people driving dangerously on the roads in the morning was “extremely concerning”.
“Some early morning commuters believe they can speed and not be detected,” he said.
“This morning was about sending a clear message: do the right thing on the roads and stick to the speed limit.”
The operation came after police witnessed 7193 offences committed on roads across Victoria on the Labor Day long weekend, from March 11 to March 14.
Almost 3000 of the offences were for speeding.
The state’s road toll is at 55 for 2022, up from 48 at this time last year.
