Brisbane streets in lockdown as armed man holds woman and toddler hostage
Streets in south Brisbane are in lockdown this evening as an armed man holds a woman and toddler hostage inside a Sunnybank home.
Heavily armed specialist police are stationed outside the Dyson Avenue property as expert negotiators attempt to talk to the man and bring the hours-long siege to a peaceful resolution.
Sources have told 9News that the situation began when police went to the property this morning to talk to the man, and he met them at the door with a gun.
Acting Inspector Mick Ackery said the man inside the home had a weapon and police were working towards a peaceful resolution.
“We’re prepared to deal with the situation for as long as it takes to ensure the safety of the community and anyone inside the house,” he said.
The tactical crime squad, detectives and other specialist police are assisting police on the scene.
Residents in nearby streets have been forced to shelter inside their homes for much of the day, with police issuing an emergency declaration just after 11am.
