Teenager killed in Thredbo skiing accident
A teenage boy has died while skiing in NSW.
Oliver Johnston, 18, is believed to have lost control on a slope, veered off and hit trees, NSW Police said.
The accident happened at 11am on Sunday at Thredbo, in the Snowy Mountains.
Other skiers noticed he was hurt and called for help.
He was treated at the scene but died after being taken to a medical centre.
Shore School in North Sydney sent out a statement about Johnston’s death, confirming he had left the school last year.
“It is with deep sadness that I write to advise you of an accident that has resulted in the tragic death of Old Boy, Oliver Johnston,” headmaster Dr Timothy Petterson said in the statement.
“The accident occurred whilst Oliver was skiing in Thredbo on Sunday morning and the incident is being managed by the relevant authorities.”
Students are being offered counselling.
His brother, William, is in year 11 at the school, the statement said.
“Please keep the Johnston family, including William (Year 11), in your thoughts and prayers at this time,” Dr Petterson said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
