Liz Hayes might have interviewed Hollywood’s most powerful celebrities and biggest rock stars, but nothing could have prepared her for maverick comedian and actor Russell Brand.
“When you interview Russell Brand you don’t really know who’s going to show up,” Hayes says.
“You hope it is good Russell,” Hayes says, “because there is bad Russell, there’s cheeky Russell, there’s naughty Russell, there’s just cranky Russell, out-of-sorts Russell, any kind of Russell could have turned up.”

Hayes ended up getting a bit of everything.
Filmed just months after his divorce from Katy Perry, the 2012 interview involved the pair smashing through a Hollywood film set on a hijacked golf cart and the notorious British lothario trying to kiss Hayes and unclip her bra.
Had it not been for GoPro cameras mounted to the cart, Hayes reckons it’s doubtful anyone would have believed what happened on his crash-bang tour.
“Russell declared that he was going to take me on an unauthorised trip around the lot,” she says.
“(He) took the wheel, and Russell can’t drive very well it turns out.
“You could see us crashing through, literally, him crashing through sets.”
Hayes says “naughty Russell” made an appearance at the end of the day.
“He understands entertainment … he’s an over-the-top performer.
“He likes to shock, that’s his thing. And he does it so well.
“I mean, what would possess any comedian, let alone Russell, to think ‘I know, I’ll take her bra off.'”
Brand doesn’t have a filter, Hayes says, but she is quick to add that he’s a “very decent man” who cares about issues and has a lot of humanity.
But with Brand getting out of control, Hayes says it was time to end the interview.
“Being with Russell means you’re a little on edge, actually, you’re not entirely relaxed.”
