Donald Trump talks of possible plan to oust Joe Biden, retake the presidency
Former President Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of running for the House of Representatives in next year’s midterm elections.
Mr Trump was asked about whether he would run for the House in an interview with conservative radio broadcaster Wayne Allyn Root.
“Why not instead of just waiting for 2024, and I’m hoping you run in 2024, but why not run in 2022 for the United States Congress, a House seat in Florida, win big, lead us to a dramatic landslide victory, taking the House by 50 seats, and then you become the speaker of the House?” Root asked Mr Trump.
The former president entertained the idea.
“You know, it’s very interesting. That’s so interesting,” Mr Trump said.
“And people have said, run for the Senate, okay, run for the Senate, but you know what? Your idea might be better. It’s very interesting.”
On Monday he was less interested.
“I think that’s highly unlikely but they do say that a lot,” he told Fox Business.
“You’ve heard that … you know, there’s a whole theory behind that. We won’t get into that right now.”
It is also possible, however unlikely, that Mr Trump could be chosen as Speaker of the House even if he isn’t elected to the chamber.
To do so, the Republican Party would need to retake the House in the midterm elections next year.
Mr Trump’s former chief advisor Steve Bannon said getting Mr Trump elected to Congress would be his first move in getting the former president back into the White House.
Speaking to a group of Massachusetts Republicans, Mr Bannon said his strategy would involve getting Mr Trump chosen as Speaker.
From there, Mr Trump would move to impeach Joe Biden. If Mr Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris were impeached, Mr Trump would then be elevated to the presidency.
Such a move would require a two-thirds vote in the Senate, an unlikely proposition.
If Mr Trump were to run for Congress, he would almost certainly need to find a new home in order to win.
His current home at his private country club of Mar-a-Lago is located in a firmly held Democratic seat in Florida’s south.
His previous home in Manhattan is located in one of the most anti-Trump seats in the country, based on 2020 results.
If he ran and won a congressional seat, he would be the first former president since John Quincy Adams to be elected to the House of Representatives in his post-presidency.
Mr Adams ran in the midterm election in 1830 immediately after his presidential defeat, and served for 17 years.
