Parts of Sydney to hit 42C as weekend heatwave settles in over NSW
After weeks of rain and cloud cover, parts of NSW are set to swelter with a heatwave expected to bring temperatures of up to 42C in some areas.
Temperatures have already begun to rise on Thursday but are forecast to increase further over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
A high-pressure system over the Tasman Sea will prompt northerly winds distributing heat throughout the state, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
Meteorologist Melody Sturm says the Illawarra, south coast and western Sydney will be among the hottest spots once the heatwave hits.
“Especially Sunday and Monday, we’ll see the highest temperatures … with Bega being the highest,” Sturm said.
“It will actually be 42C on Monday … 14C to 15C above average.”
Further north in the Illawarra, Nowra will reach 39C – 11C above average – and Bowral will hit 37C.
While coastal parts of Sydney will largely be spared from the hot weather, western and southwestern Sydney will not be so fortunate.
“Especially Penrith, we’ll see temperatures of 41C on Monday, which is 10 degrees above the January average,” Sturm said.
