Queensland drivers fined almost 2500 times a day for speeding

Queensland drivers copped about 2500 fines a day last year, with one driver caught speeding more than 67 times.

More than 900,000 infringements were issued for speeding in 2022, including 365 fines to one organisation, which is the equivalent of one penalty per day.

Police nabbed 18 people driving too fast in school zones at more than 40 km/h over the legal limit.

Australian Road Safety Foundation founder Russell White said this was a “deliberate” choice and a clear indication that “something is not right”.

“They haven’t just accidentally done that,” White said.

“It’s not just the risk of getting caught, it’s the risk of having the crash.”

Transport and Main Roads executive director Melissa Cummins said the data was “disappointing to see”.

“People aren’t getting the message that speeding kills,” Cummins said.

In a bid to put the brakes on reckless drivers, the state government is exploring whether to introduce automatic licence suspensions for anyone caught speeding by more than 40km/h.
