What is the point? Daniel Andrews laughs off newspaper’s stairs ‘investigation

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews says he has been left baffled by a front-page newspaper story “revealing” the stairs where he injured himself last year.
Andrews was forced to take several months off work when he fractured his spine and broke several ribs due to a fall at a Mornington Peninsula holiday rental in March 2021.
The premier has said the accident happened in the morning as he was getting ready to leave for work.

However, the Herald Sun spoke to rental operators who suggested the fall may have happened the night before.
Andrews said he was genuinely confused by the newspaper article.
“Can anybody tell me what the point of this story is?” he asked reporters.
“I genuinely don’t know what the point of the story is. Can any of you explain it to me? Are you going to interview the stairs next?”
“People can go as low as they want. I’m not coming there with them. It’s as simple as that. This was a terrible accident, it was an accident. It was no one’s fault.”
With the state election just three weeks away, Andrews was keen to focus on policy issues.
Today, the premier visited Noble Park RSL where he promised to establish a Victorian Veterans Card.
Card holders will get $100 off the cost of registering a vehicle, free boating and fishing licences, free trailer and caravan registration and free public transport on Anzac and Remembrance day.
“(It’s) to help them with the cost of living but also just to send that very clear message that we value their service, we value their sacrifice,” Andrews said.
The card, expected to cost $37 million, will be digital – and locked inside the Service Victoria app.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Matthew Guy today unveiled a Liberal plan to help first home buyers with stamp duty.
Under the plan, those buying their first home will not need to pay stamp duty for 12 months from the first of January 2023 on homes worth less than one million dollars.
“It’s affordable, that won’t break the bank. But it will help a lot of people get into their first home,” Guy said.
