Oprah fallout appears to widen royal rift as Prince William breaks his silence

Prince William’s “hurt” and “disappointment” was on display as he responded to Prince Harry’s tell-all TV interview, according to experienced royal watchers.

“(William) was speaking very quietly, and in a very dignified way, but you could see the hurt in him,” author and former Royal Correspondent for The Sun newspaper, Phil Dampier, told A Current Affair.

Prince William was visiting a school in London when he was questioned by a journalist.

In a rare display of a royal casually engaging with the press, Prince William hit-back at claims of racism among his relatives.

“We’re very much not a racist family,” Prince William said.

When the Prince was asked if he’d spoken to Harry since the TV special aired, William replied, “I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do”.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle both alleged an unnamed royal “had conversations about how dark the baby’s skin might be when he’s born”.

Mr Dampier said an allegation this serious would have stung Prince William.

“I think everything would have hurt him,” Mr Dampier said.

“Right now, it’s clear that there is space between the two brothers.

“I think there’s a lot of hurt on both sides and there’s a lot of work to be done. We’re all hoping that Prince Harry will be back in England for July 1, and the revealing of Princess Diana’s statue”.

Diana, Princess of Wales, would have turned 60 years old on July 1, 2021.

For some time both Princes have been committed to appearing together on that date, to unveil a statue of Diana in London’s Kensington Gardens.

“It certainly will be an emotional day,” according to Ms Reiden.

“I think it will be a very poignant day because the person who will be bringing them together is their mother, and we’re all crossing our fingers and hoping that, that day will happen.”
