A popular parenting influencer has called on the mysterious person behind Australia’s most controversial social media account to come forward.

Olivia White, whose entertaining videos have attracted 150,000 followers to her House of White page, has spoken to A Current Affair about the Celeb Spellcheck Instagram account.

“Being anonymous is a cop-out, because if you hold others accountable, you should be held accountable yourself,” Ms White said.

“(Celeb Spellcheck) engages a certain element, and you only have to look at the comments to see what it’s actually really doing.”

Celeb Spellcheck achieved notoriety by picking up typos, gaffes, and questionable posts by online influencers.

Among the targets was Amarni Skaf, who raised eyebrows when she shared with her followers that she’d just discovered a “new” type of coffee: decaf.

This is decaf coffee, I think that’s how you say it? And yeah, it’s nice, it tastes exactly like coffee,” she told her audience.

In a video she uploaded, Ms White was unpacking a grocery bag when she mistook a capsicum for a cucumber.

It’s a mistake that the mother-of-two can smile at.

“I feel like why I was up there was quite silly and innocent, and I can laugh at myself,” she said.

Dr Brent Coker from the University of Melbourne warns influencers need to be prepared for some negative feedback.

“I think when influencers put their lives on the internet, they have to expect that degree of criticism,” Dr Coker said.

“There’s always going to be trolls on the internet so there’s always going to be that negative side of it.”

Dr Coker lectures in marketing. He also runs a business managing influencers and said any publicity can help build a brand.

“If people are talking about you on social media because you spelt a word wrong, that can be fine because at the end of the day you get a lot more people knowing about you and it can be beneficial for the influencer actually,” he told A Current Affair.

But it seems the identity of Celeb Spellcheck may never be known.

On Monday, the account was retired.

Prior to powering down, Celeb Spellcheck told followers the account has “become too big, too powerful and too time-consuming for me to run it anymore. There is no scandalous reason behind this. I am permanently deleting the account.”
