Family of eight locked themselves in tiny closet as armed men robbed their house

A father has given a terrifying account of the moment his family-of-eight crammed into a wardrobe to hide from armed men in their house.

Two men with a gun kicked their way into the backdoor of the home in the suburb of Wakeley in Sydney’s southwest, around 10pm.

They pistol whipped Joe Nguyen, 41, but his other family members managed to get into a wardrobe without being spotted.

His two daughters, wife and step-mother crouched in the tiny wardrobe and called triple zero.

Nguyen’s 68-year-old father was forced to the ground by the robbers.

Meanwhile, his two sons aged three and seven, slept on peacefully in the next room.

“They just hit me with the gun,” Nguyen told 7NEWS.

“They said they just wanted money, that’s it.”

One of Nguyen’s daughters recalled: “they kicked in three kicks (to the backdoor) and then we ran into the closet just before they got through.”

“They were like ‘f***, the b**** is on, the b**** is on the call with the police’, he’s like ‘we are going to kill you if you don’t shut up’.

“It was so scary. If it was a minute longer they probably would have broken through the door that we were hiding behind.”

The robbers ran off in a 4WD before police arrived.

They tossed the gun out of the window and a passerby found it there, 400 metres away from the crime scene, along Canley Vale Road.

Police have now obtained the gun, which they believe will be a key piece of evidence to find the attackers.

Mr Nguyen was taken to hospital, but thankfully only suffered cuts to his head.
